Advanced Paediatric Emergency Care (APEC) Course

Objectives:
To provide participating physicians with both knowledge and advanced skills in recognizing and managing a wide spectrum of paediatric emergencies, both in the hospital and pre-hospital settings.

Day One - Evidence-Based management of common Emergencies

  3. Croup, Asthma and Bronchiolitis
  4. Acute Abdominal Emergencies
  5. Status Epilepticus (SE), Refractory SE, and DKA
  6. Paediatric Orthopaedic Emergencies
  7. Minor Head Injury, and Wound Management
  8. Procedural Sedation & Analgesia
  9. Common Toxicological Emergencies

Day Two - Advanced Paediatric Resuscitation

  1. Update on the 2005 Paediatric Resuscitation Guidelines (ERC/PALS)
  2. 2005 Guidelines Algorithms
  3. The Critically Injured Paediatric Patient

Skill stations

  1. BLS, Foreign Body Removal

  3. Advanced Airway Management/Bag and Mask Ventilation
  4. Intraosseous Infusion
  5. Capnography
  6. Rapid Sequence Intubation
